Off-road (MX) vs road-legal — the key distinction
Our off-road / MX bikes — like the Sting R and Komodo — are not road legal. They’re built for private land and tracks only, with no speed restriction and maximum performance. You don’t need a licence, tax or insurance to ride them, but you do need the landowner’s permission — riding an unregistered bike on public roads, pavements, bridleways or public parks is illegal.
Road-legal models are a different product. They carry EEC type approval in one of two categories — L1E or L3E — and come with the number plate, lights, mirrors, horn and restricted speed the law requires.

L1E — the moped category
- Top speed: restricted to 28 mph
- Minimum age: 16
- Licence: ride on a CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) certificate with L-plates, or a full AM/A1 licence
- Examples: Sting R L1E, Sting Pro L1E, X3 Pro Road Legal
L1E is the easiest and cheapest route onto the road, and it’s perfect for younger riders and commuters. Complete a one-day CBT, fit L-plates, sort insurance and registration, and you’re legal. The CBT is valid for two years.
L3E — the motorcycle category
- Higher speeds: e.g. the Komodo L3E is restricted to 59 mph
- Minimum age: 17
- Licence: requires a full A1 (or higher) motorcycle licence, not just a CBT
- 17-inch road wheels and road-tuned suspension for stability at speed
L3E is for riders who want genuine motorcycle performance on the road. It asks more of you in terms of licensing, but rewards you with the 32 kW, 754 Nm punch of the Komodo.
